I was a huge Jack L Chalker fan from way back, so when I noted that his novels were being offered as an audio MP3 and given the hour commute one way I drive to work and back - I went ahead and purchased this and several others. My biggest fear was the narrator, who I believe can make or break some of these novels and I was stunned (given the low price) just how great he was in his narration. The story is entertaining and fast paced and I found myself enjoying this format a ton more than reading it myself a long time ago. Mr. Chalker was a brilliant novelist with an incredible imagination... and just think, his other novels surpassed even this one.

And the Devil Will Drag You Under Jack L Chalker 9780345323347 Books Reviews

I read this book back when it first came out in 1979, so I was still somewhat young and impressionable, still trying to find my feet as a writer. The cover is what sucked me in, made me lift that book out of that rack and take it home. Darrel Sweet really rocked book covers.

I remember reading it and thinking what a neat idea the book represented. In it, a demon, Mogart, sends two humans on quests to save the world from the imminent collision with an asteroid that was hopefully being brought into Earth’s orbit so it can be mined for valuable minerals. That was a science fiction premise, but the book quickly ducks into fantasy even though the pretense of SF is kept up throughout.

The structure reminded me of old Gardner F. Fox Justice Society comics where the heroes would come together, realize the great threat before them, then break up into groups to go solve/confront various parts of the menace, then meet back up to do the final battle.

I like that the book still has that mythic quality. Reading, essentially, seven different parts of the story seems easy. I still enjoyed the various worlds that were represented in the book. They’re pretty superficial, all in all. Like I said, I was much more impressionable the first time I read it.

Looking at the book now, I real that the characters aren’t layered and don’t really grow. I didn’t really know them when I was a kid, but that didn’t matter because I wanted to be them. I wanted to be a hero who could save the day.

I also realize now that the author, Jack Chalker, was only 33 or 34 when he wrote the book, and we (the dreamers of other worlds) were all pretty innocent back in those days. The book wouldn’t stand up in New York these days, and I don’t know that my son would enjoy it either because it doesn’t have that sophisticated worldbuilding he looks for in his fantasy/SF. He’s a much more educated reader at his age than I was.

Still, And The Devil Will Drag You Under allowed me to step back in time and visit with my younger self for a while, as well as to encourage me in my writing education. I’ve written nearly 200 books, but you’re always learning in this business.

The book would be a fun read for everyone who was a Jack Chalker fan back in the day. I know I was.
I picked up this book a long time ago (1980) and thought at the time it was one of the best I'd read. I recently came across it again after a move and decided to see if it still held up.

I'm glad to say it did that and more. This is a fine fantasy-ish adventure in which one Asmodeus Mogart, who is basically a magical being who inspired the various Devil legends around the world, recruits two people to help save the world. You see those pesky humans thought they'd pull an asteroid into Earth orbit to mine the thing, there was an accident, and now it's going to smash into the Earth--UNLESS these recruits can help Asmodeus steal enough Gems to be able to deflect it.

Along the way these two hop from dimension to dimension, strange worlds which parallel the Earth we know but in which things are very "different". In one world an Islamic/Catholic religious society STRICTLY enforced (you literally cannot sin without instant and immediate punishment). In another vampires roam free and magic works to a degree, but electricity was never discovered--everything is a sort of "advanced steampunk" construction. In yet another ghosts exist, demons can steal your soul, and anything you can imagine can be conjured into existence--if you can keep your will firm and steady that is. Very imaginative and different settings all.

The ending is a bit predictable and a tad abrupt, I thought, and that irregularly bothered me both times I read the novel. I had the impression that there might have been a larger, longer ending originally but it got trimmed or cut--it does seem as if things are wrapped up a bit too tidily. But that's a small quibble for the fun the novel delivers.

I loved this book the first time around when I read it in 1980, and I loved it again the second time (not always a sure thing). VERY recommended as a bit of a different fantasy novel or if you're a Jack Chalker fan--just watch for the abrupt ending.
Super fun read awesome little adventure story some pieces i felt dragged a bit but still very entertaining
Bought this book brand new in a bookstore when I was 15. Wore it out. Found another copy in a used bookstore when I was 30. Lent it to a friend and didn't get it back. Bought another copy on when I was 45. I'm getting older, but this book isn't. Timeless story and a great read. If you buy it, you will finish it in one sitting and then start it again. I imagine I'll be buying another copy at 60!
