And Now Miguel Joseph Krumgold Jean Charlot Books Reviews

As an adult who has read numerous children's books both on my own and as read-alouds, I was for some time confused as to why this book had garnered a Newbery Medal. I hung in there and was at least a third of the way through the book before I started to understand its' value. I kept thinking that my own boys would have liked this as a read-aloud when they were in perhaps grades 2-5, maybe even 1-5. I think younger boys would identify with the way that Miguel talks about himself and looks at the world.

As it progressed I really enjoyed Miguel's brushes with adulthood and progression in the family's sheep farming operation. His talk with his older brother Gabriel toward the end of the book was just the kind of thing a grade school boy could understand. Here was 12 year old Miguel trying to make sense of how and why things happen in life. The book could easily have ended here. Instead it went on to his journey into the mountains for the sheep's summer pasturing.

I do think this book is best read-aloud or read by a thoughtful child. It would likely provoke much discussion of life issues when read-aloud. It has an odd juxtaposition of young-ness and older philosophical thinking. Also, in some ways it reads like a documentary, a genre in which the author did much work. The story moves at a very leisurely pace and this will be off-putting for many readers today. I think it is really more of an "art book" in the same way that some films are "art films". Art films are not going to appeal to all audiences and neither will Miguel's story. It will, however, be a satisfying read for many.

This book would likely be a bestseller today if the story were "tightened up", in other words shortened and edited in some ways. This book has a Roman Catholic backdrop due to the time period and location.
Miguel is caught were most boys get caught - feeling like he's a man, but treated like a child. Having never been a young boy myself, I can't speak to the veracity of this, but my husband assured me this is normal. Honestly, this was a good book with a good message but it was slow-paced. Krumgold did an excellent job of showing Miguel's culture (New Mexican culture in the 1950s) and explaining sheep-farming and Mexican-American traditions. But over all, it just felt slow. And the end - the idea that the Miguel's prayer actually mattered, and his guilt over what getting his wish meant? Seemed a bit forced. However, I understand what Krumgold was trying to say and I think his point is important to know, particular for young boys who wish to be treated as men. It was also nice to have a non-white protagonist in a non-white setting. The enter cast of characters is Mexican-American, and this is important to me. I would recommend this to anyone with boys from age 7-12, but with the warning that it might be a bit slow for today's kids.
I loved this book. This book is great Catholic and Christian Children's Literature, there are all kinds of themes running through it.
1. Sheep Learning about sheep for a child will be an excellent reference and backdrop to the many metaphors of sheep, shepherds, the Good Shepherd, Lamb of God, etc. in the bible.
2. Prayer Prayer in a child's eye's is often a wish and here it is referred to as a wish, not prayer, yet at the end children will get a small glimpse into the Our Father and why we say, "Thy will be done."
3. Coming of Age The desire to grow up and become more responsible also comes with losses, in this book we see that Miguel has to give up his beloved brother to gain his real "coming of age."
4. Hard work and sacrifice The Chavez family is truly hard working, it is a loving family where order and grace mingle.
5. Spanish There are Spanish words in the book which will make the Latino ELL reader feel comfortable and have a sense of familiarity.
6. Saints Asking for the help of a Saint, the main character, Miguel reaches for his most treasured dream. This theme may encourage prayer as well as a desire to learn more about Saints and their work in our lives.
The writing in this book takes one in immediately and keeps one throughout the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. No wonder it got a Newberry Award!

I give it my 5 stars TEACHER'S CHOICE AWARD.

If you're a 3rd or 4th grade teacher or even 2nd grade, get this for your classroom library
Book in perfect condition. Arrived as promised. Charming tale that reminds one of a simpler time long past. delightful.
A wonderful story about a rural family raising sheep in the 1950's. With the northern New Mexico backdrop, it's a beautiful story about life in a simpler time, yet so many of the same issues we face now.
