Tami tends to be overly melodramatic but she has interesting story lines and usually her books move right along. This one, however, I found repetitive, using too many characters and story lines some of which are a bit predictable but at the same time a bit too unlikely. The book was a bit clogged by numerous references to prior books and characters which also slowed the pace. It was, however, an interesting way to pass 14 hours of driving.

After reading "Deeper Than The Dead", I was very much looking forward to the continued adventures of Anne, Vince, Mendez and the population of Oak Knoll. Sadly, "Secrets To The Grave" couldn't hold a candle to its prequel.

On the positive side, the book has a nice flow, some interesting prose and several interesting characters. If that sounds like faint praise, it is.

Oddly, this book fails where the last one succeeded The characters feel contrived, lifeless and ineffective. Despite being a legendary profiler, Vince cannot figure out the killer or the killer's motive. In fact, he continually misjudges suspects, bumbling his way through a case that reaches its conclusion almost despite him. If Vince doubted his own abilities, haunted by the suspicion that his own condition may be deteriorating, then he might experience some character growth. Instead, he's relegated to puttering about Oak Knoll, following up on not very much at all and (safe one late discovery) contributing precious little.

But if Vince is merely clueless, poor Anne really gets put through the wringer, along with Haley, a four year old subjected to experiences so awful that they struck me as comical by the end of the book. The improbable, curiously contrived situations of peril felt extraneous and repetitive. Anne had much to learn but gave a lot of herself in the first book. Here, she's relegated to an overly idealistic human pincushion, making terrible decisions that put a four year old in lethal danger.

Extremely grating were the continued references to the serial killer of the first book. That killer was a much more formidable villain, a character worth returning to. I was hopeful that the numerous mentions of the upcoming trial meant that Secrets to the Grave would provide new, shocking information that would dovetail into the See No Evil Killer's trial-- but instead, after much exposition, nothing of any appreciable effect on the (still presumably upcoming) trial ever occurs.

One can only surmise that Hoag is taking the long view, planting seeds that will pay off somewhere along the series' plotted-out timeline. This book perhaps suffers from its awkward position in that timeline, leaving me restless and unsatisfied, but hopeful that the next book will begin to tie together the many interesting loose threads.
Detective Tony Mendez and FBI profiler Vince Leone are back in the second Oak Knoll novel which delivers suspense and great storytelling just like the first one of the series. Hoag keeps the pace flying, while introducing new characters and integrating them in with the characters that we love. She does this in almost flawless fashion.

Oak Knoll has another brutal murder as Marissa Fordham is found dead and the only witness is her four year old daughter, who barely escapes with her life. Leone and Mendez must figure out a case that has a dozen twists and turns and while there are plenty of suspects there are very little clues. The questions are not only limited to the murder but they also start to wonder who Marissa actually was as they start to get more questions than answers. As the truth of who the victim was starts to unravel the more people that might have wanted her dead come out as well. Another interesting aspect to the story is trying to figure out whether or whether not the young daughter Haley knows the killer and can identify that individual. That is where Anne Navarre Leone comes in as she tries to help in the investigation and also tries to help the young victim get through an attempt on her life, which is something that Anne knows a lot about.

This novel takes place directly after "Deeper than the Deep", so once again no DNA evidence, no cell phones and a lot of other luxuries that we have today. The mystery must be figured out the old fashion way and Hoag delivers another excellent novel.

This book is #2 of a 3 part series and I had not read book #1. I would highly recommend reading #1 before reading this book, even though some of the reviews said it could be a stand alone book. I don't feel that way. There were many references to the first book and it was somewhat confusing. At Chapter 9, I decided that I was going to get #1 and read it first, however, the only price that I could find was $10 and I wasn't going to pay that much for a book. So, I finished this book and I did enjoy it. Actually, I did have the killer figured out and was rather surprised that I was right! To go back and read #1 would be interesting, but I know who did it before even starting - thanks to already reading #2. I hadn't read a Tami Hoag book in a long time and was anxious to read her again. I don't find many "deals" for my from her.
My fiance and I have both gotten into reading Tami Hoag books. They are well written and allow readers to get a deeper look into the protagonist and their mind set. This helps you to really connect to the character and understand their behavior/actions. Secrets to the Grave and the 9th Girl are amongst my favorites by Hoag. In fact, while my fiance is away, I'll buy one (or get it from the local library if available!) for myself and purchase a second to be delivered to him then we talk about what we think is happening during our nightly calls. Not only am I thrilled to have found an author I enjoy, but I'm happy to have found one who gets a non-bookworm excited about reading as well! I've purchased 2 sets of 7 or 8 different Hoag books by now and we've both thoroughly enjoyed them. They are captivating, contain relatable characters, and keep you engaged.
