The story idea is great.A future Viscount, who goes by Brand, is given the opportunity to become a Duke by inheriting the estate of his Father's very best friend. The only catch is that he must wed the daughter, Adria, in order to fully inherit the title.
However, he doesn't realize that he has to marry her to inherit the title as he has been acting as the Duke for years, gaining the title after the death of his father's friend. He grew up with the Adria(who incidentally has always been in love with him) but was many years her senior, and always felt trapped in the betrothal. So he sabotages it by being found in a compromising position with another woman.
Then Adria shows up after years of separation and instead of a gangly teen, she is now a gorgeous woman. It is love at first sight for Brand. Right away he realizes what a horrible mistake he has made.
So the plot line sets you up to think that there is going to be a miscommunication between the lovers - that Adria is going to think Brand's advances are because he wants the title, while they are truly because he is now, finally, in love with her.
Great idea for an author who can really write a witty, intriguing tale of romance, desire and human foibles.
Instead what you get is hundreds of pages of excruciatingly painful dialogue that is often confusing at best and downright nonsensical at worst. The "action" scenes are jumbled and the descriptions of what is happening is difficult to picture happening in real life now, much less in the time period. Also not accurate to the period is the occasional outburst of obscene language and the misbehavior of the ton (in one scene they mob Brand's parents at a fancy ball to confirm the gossip and say outrageous things with blatant sexual innuendos right in front of them).
The other unbelievable aspect of the book is Brand's behavior once he falls in love. He goes from being a notorious rake with a brilliant mind and the ability to double the assets of the estate he is supposed to inherit, to being a bumbling idiot who can't think straight, can't string sentences together, gets in a jealous rage over someone just holding Adria's hand, and has hot-headed fights with everyone around him.
Then there is Adria - who apparently can't tell from Brand's hot and fierce kisses as well as his over-the-top possessive behavior that he really wants her. Nope, she doesn't think he cares about her at all and still remembers how he turned down kissing her the last time he had the chance. I'm not sure how she can be so obtuse, but clearly she is.
A skilled writer would make it subtle enough that it would be obviously confusing to the heroine, leaving it possible that he could be just out for the title, but in this case, every person within a 10-foot radius of Brand could figure out that he is at least passionately in lust, if not love.
So definitely don't spend the $7.99 on this book. I'm sorry I bought the Kindle version for $2.99, the only way this would have been worth it is if it was free.

The Duke Of Eden Full Novel edition by Mary Anne Graham Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
I'll be honest and say that I did not finish the book so it's possible that the hero improved dramatically by the end but I doubt it. The hero was supposed to be such a smart man but he didn't make one smart choice. He was also incredibly spoiled, untrustworthy, unkind and selfish. (I'm not ruling out sex addict.) If I can't like the characters I can't like the book.
This was my first novel by Mary Anne Graham and I couldn't put it down. The development of the protagonists with the hero and heroine was well written and I enjoyed the turn in the story line for the hero and his atypical reaction to being in love. His uncharacteristic obsession and over reaction to being gobsmacked head over heels was endearing. While the heroine's angst and loss of faith that she found again in time to save the hero from himself had me completely riveted.
For anyone who hasn't ever read a Mary Anne Graham book, you are in for a treat. For those who have read a Mary Anne Graham book, you will not be disappointed to learn that she delivers once again!
Once again, we find a pair who are just fated to be with a dumb hero who just doen't know what hit him- until it hits him- and boy does it.
You will laugh. You will cry. You will want to hit the hero in the head with something large. And then hit him again.
You will fall in love.
Don't miss out )
