Thomas Tryon is a great storyteller and writer. Before he became a best-selling novelist, he worked as a Hollywood actor. This book is his fourth and consists of 4 novellas of 4 fictional film stars. "Fedora" tells the tale of a Garbo-like actress whose face never ages. This beautifully-written story has the surprise, twisted ending that Tryon is so good at. "Lorna" is the sex-kitten who travels to Mexico where the reader witnesses her deteriorating mental condition. This is my favorite of the 4 stories. "Bobbitt" is the highly successful child actor who grows up to be a strange adult. "Willie" is the typical leading man from the Golden Age of Hollywood who is murdered in his home by heartless, lazy, useless hippies who are a by-product of the social upheaval of the 1960's. Tryon should be ranked as one of America's great storytellers and writers.

I purchased this book because I had just read Lady, another novel by Tryon, that I really enjoyed. I hertily recommend that one!
Unfortunately, Crowned Heads was not of the same caliber. It is a set of stories of tangentially related characters. Maybe it came together in the end, but after reading two of the stories, it didn't hold my interest enough to keep reading. The focus characters were so contrived as to be uninteresting. Perhaps there was a point at the end, but since I couldn't get engaged in the individual pieces, I just figured the "climax" would be equally unsatisfying.
Excellent book. Surprises everywhere.I read this years ago but wanted this copy to keep. It is one of the books I read over and over.
I love the book, I think it is one of the most amazing book I have read because of the twist and turns the author makes.
I read this when it was first published, but it was nice to revisit. I spent my time trying to figure out who each character was based on. Fun read.
Normally I'm interested in tales of Old Hollywood, but Tryon's book failed to generate any sort of enthusiasm in me. I found Crowned Heads to be very slow and ultimately concerning characters about whom I didn't care.
Being an old movie lover I really enjoyed this book. I would have given it a 4 1/2 star review, however, believe it or not after all of these years I have yet to figure out how to do it. ( Someone please let me know if you can!) Anyway, as I said I enjoyed this book immensely, trying to figure out who the characters might be, but.... for me some of the scenes with "LORNA and WILLIE" went on too long for me. Everyone raves about Mr. Ryan's previous works and I'm sure they are wonderful, however I think I'll stick to "OLE HOLLYWOOD!"
I have read literally hundreds of books, or more, in my lifetime of currently 70 years. This includes quite some time as a Literature professor. No bragging, just credentialing. Do not bother reading, or trying to read, this book. It is absolutely the biggest mess of words tossed together that I have ever tried to read. This seems to be a man who sees himself as a classic author, defined by how difficult it is to make sense out of pages of non-sentences strung together in non-paragraphs.
Good news for some of you! There is porn and violence. Bad news? So badly written that you may find it so confusing and badly written that the "thrills" just aren't there.
